Irfan Amjad came within six of a century and Jack Hughes, above, and Ashley Robinson were top bowlers as Yorkshire Academy crushed Sheffield United by 122 runs in the Solly Sports EBC Yorkshire County Premier League on Saturday.
The Academy won the toss, decided to bat, and the first-wicket pair of skipper Alex Lees and Callum Geldart put on 44 before they were parted. Lees was stumped with the score on 51 when chasing down the wicket – but this brought to the wicket Amjad and Jack Hargreaves, who had put on 53 when Zafran Ali bowled Hargreaves.
Amjad stood firm, and struck 11 fours in his 94 – his best performance this year – but his running between the wickets did give cause for concern: he came to the crease in the 13th over, and was last out in the 55th. It was an excellent knock…94 of the 198 made while he was in. Considering that five out of the last six batsmen failed to reach double figures, one wonders what the Academy total would have been without him.
Sheffield spinner Nazakarat Khan had the excellent figures of 4-46 in 11 overs – but the Academy were grateful for the 36 extras Sheffield conceded.
Ben Coad and Robinson opened the Academy’s attack - and Ashley certainly made full use of the new ball: he took four of the first five wickets to fall, and finished with outstanding figures of 4-31. Only David Rodgers of the first five batsmen looked sound, a number falling to poor technique. Reece Shutt held up the Academy later with his 54 containing nine fours, and it was Hughes who claimed his wicket - Hargreaves taking the first of his three catches.
Hughes finished with 4-27 from 10 overs. Victory by 122 runs means that the Academy maintain their challenge on League leaders York and second-placed Barnsley. Next week’s tie against Barnsley should be worth a visit to Weetwood.
