The absence of openers Callum Geldart and Alex Lees and an injury to leading wicket-taker Gurman Randhawa cost Yorkshire Academy dear as they went down by 15 runs to Driffield in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.
Having left-arm spinner Randhawa injured in the warm-up at Weetwood was a significant setback following the absence of usual openers Geldart and Lees – playing against India ‘A’ – and the Academy’s top performance of the day was an innings of 57 by Jack Hargreaves, above.
Driffield won the toss – but did not start well: Ben Coad bowled wicket-keeper Ben Kohler-Cadmore, and had skipper Joe Fraser caught behind by Barney Gibson. A stand of 72 by Sam Drury and opener Will Norman turned things round – Norman taking 140 balls to reach his 52 before he was caught by Jack Hughes off spinner George Ross, who was to end with 3-25.
Coad was most economical, as was Hughes, but the Academy certainly missed Randhawa’s spin on a wicket that would have suited him. Middle-order batsmen Rob Drury, Nick Hardgrave and Tom Chippendale pushed the total on to 186 – normally quite within the range of Academy batsmen.
Olly Ezard had other ideas, taking two early wickets – Ross for two and Hughes for a duck. The absence of Geldart and Lees severely weakened the batting line-up, but a partnership of 116 by Hargreaves and opener Irfan Amjad, 48, took the Academy to 116-3 with 22 overs in which to score a further 80.
Left-arm spinner Nick Hardgrave bowled an excellent line from the City end, and showed great control: his 19.5 overs were responsible for five of the wickets to fall, and he was ably assisted by David Brent who sent down a similar number of overs, but was slightly more expensive.
Four stumpings by Kohler-Cadmore came as the later batsmen pressed to increase the scoring rate. It was Driffield’s day, with Hardgrave and Brent the match-winners, and only four Academy batsmen reached double figures.
