Emerald Education Day A Great Success— 19 June 2014
On Friday 6th June, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation in partnership with the Emerald Foundation, Chance to Shine and Yorkshire Tea, organised and hosted the Emerald Education day. A brand new event for 2014, 600 children from 20 schools selected by the YCB were invited to enjoy a range of educational workshops, a poster design competition as well as the opportunity to play cricket on the hallowed turf of Headingley.
After heavy rain earlier in the week, the chances of play on the outfield looked unlikely, however Friday morning saw bright sunshine with the forecast set fair. The day began with an assembly hosted by Dave Callaghan who was joined by Yorkshire and England star Jonny Bairstow. After a question and answer session, Jonny refereed a bowl out between 2 teams with a mix of children from Copthorne Primary and Dunnington Primary schools each winning a pair of tickets to the upcoming England v Sri Lanka test match at Headingley.
At 10:30am, the 20 schools all departed to take part in their 1st of their 4 workshops escorted by young leaders from local schools in Yorkshire. The workshops took place all over the ground with the England v Sri Lanka themed poster design competition in both the Longroom and the YCF Classrooms, Bollywood dance lessons in the East Stand nets area. The Carnegie Pavilion hosted Sporting Influence, Lend Me Your Literacy, Pinsent Masons and a Major Match Day workshop that focussed on Yorkshire CCC departments and how they prepare for their Major Match Days. YCF tour guide Mel Reuben led behind the scenes Stadium Tours while the rest of the schools were based on the pitch playing kwik cricket and honing their skills with Direct Action training.
The event was a fantastic success and was a fitting way to end the Yorkshire Tea National Cricket week. The time and effort in the planning and delivery from the workshop providers combined with the engagement and conduct of the schools ensured a day to remember and an event that will be delivered for future years.
