NatWest T20 Blast: Vikings conquer Falcons at Headingley

— 30 May 2014

Vikings new hero Aaron Finch was out-hit by the superb Alex Lees as Yorkshire raced to an eight wicket win, their first of their Natwest T20 Blast campaign.

  • Scorecard

Finch showed a glimpse of what he will bring to the side in his innings of 19, including a big straight six off just his third ball, but it was the innings of Lees that really took the game away from the visiting side, as he hit 61 not out in just 41 balls to see his side home with six overs remaining.

Lees arrived at the crease in the second over after skipper Andrew Gale chipped the ball up to point with the score on 22-0.

Finch and the number three bullied the Derbyshire bowling attack and after hitting Mark Turner for 21 in an over, they rocketed the score up to 70-1 at the end of the powerplay.

The Australian was dismissed trying to deposit Marcus North into the stands but Jonny Bairstow looked in supreme form as he hit a rapid 29 to see his side home alongside Lees.

Derbyshire had struggled with the bat, despite making a positive start in reaching 34-0 in four overs. However, a superb piece of fielding from Ollie Robinson broke the partnership of Stephen Moore and Chesney Hughes with a direct hit from cover and the Falcons innings never took off after that.

Hughes followed shortly after, pulling a Liam Plunkett delivery to Robinson who again made no mistake on the boundary to make the score 46-2 at the end of the powerplay.

Adil Rashid kept the pressure on and was rewarded with two quick wickets, dismissing Wes Durston and North to make it 49-4 in the eighth over.

After a period of rebuilding, Scott Elstone was well caught by Alex Lees off Liam Plunkett’s bowling to make it 91-5 with just five overs to go.

Some sloppy fielding and 34 not out from Wayne Madsen meant that Derbyshire reached 127-6 at the end of their 20 overs, with Rashid the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers, taking 2-19 in his four overs.

The Vikings head to Northampton tomorrow to resume their LV=County Championship campaign.
