Yorkshire to celebrate Regiment Day at Headingley on Sunday
— 22 May 2014
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club hosts the Yorkshire Regiment on Sunday May 25 2014 at Headingley during the opening day of the LV= County Championship game between Yorkshire and Lancashire.
The Duke of Leeds Cup, on long term loan to Yorkshire from the Regiment, is annually contested in games between the two county sides and the trophy, which was shared last year when there was a tie in the T20 match at Headingley, will be up for grabs for the opening Roses match of the season.
The band of the Yorkshire Regiment will play prior to play and at the lunch interval. All military personnel are invited to attend the match free of charge when they show their MOD card on the gate and Yorkshire County Cricket Club are urging everyone to come and show their support.
David Hall, Yorkshire County Cricket Club Museum Curator and the organiser of the event, said: “We’ve hosted the Yorkshire Regiment Day for many years now and it is always a popular day in the summer of cricket at Headingley. Once again, we are delighted that both clubs are supporting this great initiative. We are expecting it to be a great day as we welcome our old rivals Lancashire to Headingley.”
The Regiment was formed in 2006 from its distinguished Yorkshire Infantry predecessors, The Prince of Wales own Regiment of Yorkshire, The Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.
Three distinguished former Yorkshire and England players Hedley Verity, Herbert Sutcliffe and Norman Yardley are amongst those Yorkshire Cricketers who have served in the Regiment’s predecessors.
During the game a collection will be made for the Regimental Charity, which supports the families of those who have lost their lives in the service of the country. The Regiment lost five soldiers in 2012 in Afghanistan in a single incident.
Lt. Col. David O’Kelly of the Yorkshire Regiment said: “All the money raised will be spent to help transform the lives of wounded service personnel and we encourage everyone to support the day”.
Tickets for the LV=CC Yorkshire v Lancashire match are £16 Adults and £10 Concessions on the gate.
