Bairstow to miss opening month of new season

— 9 April 2014

Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper Jonathan Bairstow will miss the first month of the season after fracturing his ring finger on his left hand in the three-day friendly against Northamptonshire.

The Vikings gloveman is set to be out of action for up to six weeks with the break.

  • Bairstow had to leave the field at Wantage Road yesterday after receiving a painful blow when attempting to take a ball down the leg side from Liam Plunkett.

After seeing a specialist in Leeds on Wednesday afternoon, scans revealed that the 24-year-old had suffered the cruel injury, which mean that he is set miss the first four matches of the new LV= County Championship starting on Sunday in the season opener against Somerset at Taunton.

“It is a devastating blow for Jonny,” said Yorkshire’s First team Coach Jason Gillespie.

“Jonny has been working incredibly hard to put in some strong performances for Yorkshire during the early part of the season to enhance his England credentials.

“It is a great shame for him and I know that he is really disappointed with the news. He will be working hard on his rehab and we remain hopeful that if the fracture can heal quickly he could be back sooner. We have to remain patient and Jonny will work closely with our medical team over the next few weeks to get back to action.

  • “It was an innocuous injury. In these circumstances Jonny would take that ball a hundred times without any problems. Things like this can happen in professional sport. It is how you deal with it that matters most and I know that with his (Bairstow) positivity, he will be chomping at the bit to get back to playing for Yorkshire as soon as possible.”
