  • The internal two-day match between Team Ballance and Team Pyrah ended in a competitive draw as rain and bad light ended proceedings 4.10pm local time at RPICS, Colombo.

At the end of day one, Team Ballance ended on 293 for 9 and were looking to put pressure on the Pyrah boys during the final day.
Wicketkeeper Dan Hodgson and all-rounder Adil Rashid were the standout batsmen for Team Pyrah on the second day of the two-day game against the Ballance XI.

Hodgson, who opened the batting, looked composed at the crease as he showed great resolve to score 90 from 184 balls. His patient innings lasted 131 minutes included 10 fours.

In contrast, Rashid bullied the bowling with some fantastic strokeplay hitting the ball to all parts. At close, he scored nearly a run a ball amassing 68 not out from 69 balls including nine fours and two sixes.

For the first wicket, Hodgson and young right-hander Jack Leaning looked set and put on 113 runs before Leaning was bowled by the reliable Steve Patterson, who had a terrific game – thanks to 50 not out in his sides innings and bowling a consistent line and length resulting in miserly figures of 1 for 14 from 10 overs.

When Leaning fell, Rashid came to the wicket and first ball up he despatched Patterson for an exquisite cover drive to the boundary. That set the tone for the Bradford-born leg spinner to dominate the bowling looking to score off virtually every delivery.

Alongside Hodgson, the pair put on 79 runs for the second wicket with Rashid contributing to 49 of those runs.

Captain Richard Pyrah came to the crease and finished 16 not out from 14 balls.

On the bowling front, Patterson and Ryan Sidebottom were the pick of the seamers for Team Ballance. Both bowled well in tandem and threatened in helpful conditions for the batsmen. Sidebottom bowled 10 overs conceding only 15 runs. He was very unlucky not to have picked up a wicket.

  • “This has been a good workout for the lads,” said Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon.

“It has been a competitive match played in sweltering conditions. We have to thank the Sri Lanka Cricket Board giving us the opportunity to play at the one of the best stadiums in the country.

“Both teams played some excellent cricket and I was particular pleased with the way that the batsmen went about their work. Adam Lyth’s century on day one was excellent and Dan Hodgson’s innings on day two supported by Adil Rashid was positive.

“I also have to give a mention to all the bowlers who toiled away in hot conditions. They have earnt a day off tomorrow.

“We will now start developing our skills for T20 cricket over the next few days.”
