Left-arm spinner Karl Carver, above, was the pick of Yorkshire Academy’s attack as they despatched a weakened Sheffield Collegiate by eight wickets to claim the full eight points in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.
The Academy by contrast were strengthened by the return of England Under-19 and Under-17 players. Collegiate won the toss at Weetwood, decided to bat, and openers Waterson and Walton put on 23 runs in 3.5 overs. Then Waterson’s attempted pull saw the ball skied to Eliot Callis at slip.
Ben Coad replaced Jared Warner, who had bowled two expensive overs. He had little success at first, but a second-wicket stand of 34 was ended by Hussain, who dived at mid-on to send former Yorkshire wicket-keeper Simon Guy back to the pavilion.
Tom Lister became Coad’s victim as a thin edge was snapped up behind by Barney Gibson. 67-3. Not so good for Collegiate. Two stands of 33 by Matt Lee and Josh Varley with Daniel Walton took the total on to 146-6, but opener Walton was caught at mid-off by Coad off Carver, a desperate blow.
Walton had held the innings together, and only Varley of the later batsmen impressed. Varley was bowled for 25 by Carver, who delivered his full allowance of 17 overs to finish with the fine figures of 3-27. Last-wicket pair Dixon and Scholfield put on 27, but medium-pacer Will Rhodes came back to clean up Collegiate skipper Dixon for 13, and they closed on 180.
Callis, a former Collegiate player himself, shared an excellent opening partnership of 53 with England Under-19 batsman Jonathan Tattersall, and when Callis was adjudged lbw to Scholfield a second big stand developed: Mosun Hussain and Tattersall added 88, but at 141 Hussain on 40 lofted Lee to deep mid-off where Luke Shutt took an easy catch. It was a pity he was not still there at the finish.
That honour went to Tattersall, who struck 76 in 86 balls, including 12 fours. Rhodes, the Academy captain, scored his 19 runs in 13 balls – driving four excellent boundaries through mid-wicket. A complete victory to the Academy with 20 overs and eight wickets to spare.
