All-rounder Will Rhodes, library picture, and paceman Ben Coad were the outstanding performers when Yorkshire Academy despatched Sheffield Collegiate by 25 runs in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League at Abbeydale Park yesterday (Saturday).
Academy skipper Alex Lees won the toss and batted – but in the first over he was caught by Ashley Blakey – son of Richard – off Luke Shutt after securing a boundary. Jonathan Tattersall and Mosun Hussain put on 23, but then Tattersall was caught by diving wicket-keeper Simon Guy, again off Shutt.
The early scoring was slow, but three fours off Josh Varley’s first over saw him replaced by left-arm spinner Oliver Pearson. Hussain and Rhodes saw the Academy through a difficult period, adding 68 runs until attempted reverse-sweep saw Hussain back in the pavilion.
Rhodes and wicket-keeper Barney Gibson shared a stand of 24, but at 116 Guy stumped Gibson off Pearson. Rhodes and Josh Shaw stepped up the scoring rate, and the board showed 161 when Collegiate skipper Matt Dixon at short-leg caught Rhodes to end his fine innings of 79 with 10 fours.
James Wainman and Shaw added a further 20 before Guy stumped Wainman off Dixon. Four runs later Dixon trapped Shaw in front to end his knock of 37 at a run a minute with three fours and a six. Pearson bowled Matthew Fisher for nine, but James Brown and Karl Carver took the final total to 214-8 in the last five overs.
The hoped-for early break after tea did not happen. Openers Blakey and Jacob Waterson almost shared a century partnership, Blakey falling to Rhodes at 99 after cracking 63 in 93 balls. Tom Lister reached 15 before he was bowled by Brown. 138-2. Guy’s appearance at the crease heralded a quickening of the scoring rate, but when Coard bowled Varley at 175 the innings fell away.
The combination of Coad, who finished with 5-27, and Rhodes, 3-23, saw the 10th wicket fall on 189. The tail failed to wag. Points were there for Collegiate’s taking, but the last five wickets fell for 14 runs as the batsmen crumbled.
The Academy take eight points for a complete win, and so hold on to third place. Let us hope for a similar positive display at Harrogate in today’s League fixture.
