Jonathan Tattersall, pictured during his 12th-man stint at the Headingley Test against New Zealand, reeled off an undefeated 85 as Yorkshire Academy despatched Harrogate by nine wickets in Round 2 of the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League Cup. They meet York in the Sem-Finals.
Harrogate won the toss at Weetwood esterday (Sunday), decided to bat, and made a reasonable start before overseas Australian professional Calum How was caught excellently low down by paceman Matthew Fisher off his own bowling.
An excellent partnership of 82 by George Ross – who was with the Academy last season – and Alexis Twigg was broken by when John Brown bowled Twigg at 127. Hugo Peterson was caught at mid-wicket for one by Mosun Hussain off Lewis Stabler, who bowled really well in his second spell: he picked up two more wickets, both Hawkswell and Laws also failing to get out of single figures.
Five wickets fell in the space of 37 runs, thanks mainly to tighter bowling and some good fielding. Captain Ryan Bradshaw was the only middle-order batsman to reach double figures as the fielding side maintained the upper hand in the second half of the innings. Harrogate had to settle for 189-9 in the 45 overs.
I was leaving the ground, loading scorers’ equipment into my car, when two spectators said to me : “How impressive the Academy have been today.” I could not disagree, as the board read Yorkshire Academy 190-1 . “In fact, they were brilliant today.” I could not disagree.
The openers took it to 27 before Eliot Callis was caught by Driver off Whiles for 12 – but there were no further pickings for Harrogate as MosunHussain and captain and opener Tattersall shared a match-winning partnership of 163. Their running between the wickets was superb, and they were rarely troubled by the Harrogate attack.
Tattersall scored 85 in 100 balls, never giving a chance, while Hussain gave very capable support with 69 not out at the close. A superb victory. The Academy now meet League leaders York in the semi-finals in late July. It may well be a match worth watching.
