Off-spinning all-rounder Azeem Rafiq, above, bounced back from injury to lead Yorkshire Academy to victory by 28 runs over his former club, Barnsley, in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League yesterday. The Academy remain in the top three – behind York and Barnsley.
Rafiq opened the batting, and was bowled for three, but his excellent 4-45 in 13 overs settled the matter. The Academy lost the toss at Weetwood, and were asked to bat, but in the fifth over Matthew Rushworth broke through Rafiq’s defence. Mosun Hussain and Jonathan Tattersall settled down to a second-wicket partnership of 62, but Tattersall overbalanced to be stumped by Tom Shaw.
Only threewere added before Jenkinson bowled Hussain, who played round a straight one. Eliot Callis paid the penalty when he played back to off-spinner Ali Jahangir, and the Academy slipped to 134-7 in the 37th over after a number of poor shots by the middle-order.
James Wainman played sensibly, occupying the crease in stands of 22 with Josh Shaw and 48 with Jared Warner. Wainman hit four fours and a six, and it was largely thanks to him that Yorkshire reached 207- 9 from their allotted 55 overs. Ali Jahangir came in with 4-68 after 17 excellent overs.
Josh Shaw bowled openers Trower and Wilson, and after eight overs Barnsley were 37-3. Skipper Steve Nuttall and wicket-keeper Shaw made a slow start, and wickets for pacemen Matthew Fisher and Wainman had Barnsley struggling at 57-4.
Rafiq’s fine spell saw his side moving steadily towards victory with the hosts slumped on 130-7. Callum Bethell had other ideas: he scored at a run a ball, hitting 43 with four fours and three sixes, and should have gone on to 50, but at 157 he skied a catch to Lewis Stabler.
Back to pace, and Fisher, a first-team debutant last week, mopped up the last two batsmen to finish with a tidy analysis of 3-37 and give the home team eight valuable points for a complete win.
It is to be hoped that this run of form continues today when the Academy play Harrogate at Weetwood in Round 2 of the League Cup.
