England v New Zealand at Headingley - The Stats

— 23 May 2013

Yorkshireccc.com takes a look at the history of England v New Zealand at Headingley.

This will be Headingley’s 72nd Test Match. Headingley’s first Test Match took place in 1899, when England drew with Australia. In total, England have won 30 times at Yorkshire’s home with 22 defeats and 18 draws. Headingley has hosted one neutral Test in 2010, when Pakistan defeated Australia.

New Zealand return to Yorkshire for the first time since 2004. The first time England played New Zealand at Headingley in a Test Match was in 1949. There have been six Tests between the two sides at St Michael’s Lane, with England winning on four occasions, New Zealand once – back in 1983 – and there has been one draw during the inaugural encounter.

New Zealand have fared better in One-Day Internationals on the venue with three victories from their four appearances. This includes two World Cup encounters – against India in 1979 and a drawn game versus Zimbabwe in a ‘Super Six’ match during the 1999 World Cup.

Against England, they have an unblemished record with two victories from two matches. Their last victory coming in 1990 after an inspired 102 from Mark Greatbatch saw the Black Caps win by four wickets.

In addition to international cricket, New Zealand have played Yorkshire at Headingley on three occasions, with the White Rose having the upper hand during their last visit in 1994 with an innings victory thanks to a five-wicket haul from Craig White in New Zealand’s first innings. The other two matches – 1937 and 1978 – were drawn.
