Yorkshire County Cricket Club are to embark on an eight-day training camp to Sri Lanka later this month as the Club continues its preparations ahead of the new season.
First team captain Andrew Gale and new signing Jack Brooks, will join players’ from the Yorkshire Academy where they will develop their cricketing skills as part of the Club’s affiliation with the Global Cricket Academy.
The seven-man delegation, led by second team coach Paul Farbrace and development manager Richard Damms, will see the players’ train in outstanding conditions ahead of the Club’s pre-season tour to Barbados next month.
“The idea of the training camp is to continue to develop the skills of our varied squad in new surroundings,” said Farbrace, who has organised the camp at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo, the venue where England defeated Sri Lanka in the second Test match last April.
“Our batsmen will be able to take their winter indoor sessions to batting on grass wickets in excellent conditions. This was one of the reasons why Andrew Gale wanted to attend the camp.
“For the bowlers, in particular Jack Brooks who didn’t play much cricket during the second half of last season, they will be able to get in the nets and have long sessions getting back to some proper bowling fitness.
“We want Jack (Brooks) to hit the new season fully prepared and become one of our main strike bowlers as we aim for success on all fronts.”
“This is the first time I’ve played cricket in Sri Lanka and I’m looking forward to learning my trade and experiencing a new culture,” added Yorkshire Captain Andrew Gale.
“From my point of view, I want to get into the nets in outdoor conditions and start hitting some balls. The indoor facilities at Headingley are excellent, but nothing beats playing and practising outdoors.
“Literally, we’ll be netting from 8.30am in the morning right through to early evening. It will be pretty intense but ideal preparation for me and the guys. I will focus on batting against spin and improving my specifics in that area of my game.”
Yorkshire will fly out on Monday February 18 and return to Yorkshire on Thursday February 28.
