ACAD: Yorkshire middle order does the business

— 28 August 2012

Jonathan Tattersall, above, maintained his fine form this season with 57 as the Yorkshire Academy batsmen saw them to a five-wicket win over Cleethorpes in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League on Bank Holiday Monday.

The weather forecast was not great when the Academy won the toss at Chichester Road and  sent Cleethorpes in to bat. Hopes of an early breakthrough was not forthcoming as openers Rory Osmond and Bill Kirby slowly built their innings, and the total was 135 when sixth-change bowler Karl Carver had Rory caught by Lewis Stabler for 71.

James Osmond, Charlie Tomlinson and Harry Clewett all failed to reach double figures – victims of Stabler and Carver – and Alex Osmond was well caught at long-on by Will Rhodes off Matthew Fisher. Bill Kirby, out of touch in recent innings, was running out of partners as the home side chased for runs.

A light shower threatened just before tea, when Kirby was unbeaten on 101, his hundred coming in 148 balls. The tight Academy attack had restricted Cleethorpes to 215-6, but the covers were on during the tea break when the big question was whether there would be more play.

The shower ceased – and umpires George Wood and Ray Knowles led the players out. Eliott Callis and Tattersall scored more quickly than the Cleethorpes openers had done – but an indisciplined shot saw Callis caught behind. We then witnessed a fine second-wicket stand of 60 in 12 overs by Mosun Hussain and Tattersall, their 50 oming up in 68 balls.

Clewett came on at the scorebox end, and he caught and bowled Hussain at 111 after 20 overs.  Twelve runs later spinner Alex Osmond had Tattersall caught at slip by brother James, but at 123-3 with 30 overs remaining the Academy were heading for a win. Wicket-keeper Edward Wilson fell to Tomlinson’s diving catch – another Clewett victim – and 83 were still needed when Will Rhodes joined George Ross.

This partnership put on 71 runs, Ross being a third Clewett victim to end a fine innings of 41. Only 12 runs were needed when Fisher came in to partner Rhodes, and victory was achieved with 15.1 overs remaining. Rhodes was unbeaten on 43, scored in 31 deliveries.

The Academy take six points, thanks largely to their superior  middle-order. The Academy pace bowlers were much more economical than the Cleethorpes seam attack, and Yorkshire’s coaches  would be pleased with the day after Saturday’s washout at Barnsley.
