MATCH REPORT

Jonny Bairstow cracked an unbeaten 68 as Yorkshire outplayed the Sussex Sharks in all departments to secure their place in this evening’s final and book their Champions League berth.

At 36-3 after 5.4 overs the Sussex Sharks would have been far and away the happier side until a fourth wicket stand of 92 between Bairstow and David Miller saw the Tykes rebuild and then regain control.

Andrew Gale (11) was caught by Nash after poking a catch off Scott Styris. Styris then bowled Phil Jaques (2) and had Joe Root (11) lbw to leave the pre-match underdogs reeling.

David Miller has been a revelation for the White Rose county en route to Finals Day and he didn’t disappoint the large travelling contingent. Two huge straight sixes and 4 fours saw him to 47 from 35 balls as he helped Bairstow towards a formidable final total of 172-6.

Bairstow’s 69 came in 45 balls and included 3 sixes and 2 fours as he initially anchored the innings and then provided final impetus.

Miller was caught by Joe Gatting at long-on off the bowling of Chris Nash, Gary Ballance (7) sliced a Liddle full toss to Michael Yardy at extra cover and Tim Bresnan (6) was caught by Murray Goodwin to give Liddle his second scalp.

But Bairstow grew in stature as his innings saw his side to a total that always looked too much for the Sharks.

Chris Nash had other ideas as his unbeaten 80 from 58 balls didn’t deserve to be on the losing side, but he found little support from his teammates against Yorkshire bowling that offered nothing easy.

Nash played some delightful paddle sweeps, including one which cleared the fine leg boundary from a Ryan Sidebottom delivery. But Yorkshire’s trademark this summer has been strong fielding and bowling displays and they never let the Sharks settle.

Bresnan with 2-22, Pyrah 2-30 and controlled displays from Sidebottom, Rafiq and Ashraf, who again impressed with late over yorkers, proved the difference as the Tykes ran out 36-run winners.

Champions League here we come, but first of all it’s the small matter of a showpiece final against either Somerset or Hampshire.

Update 23rd August 2012

The ECB last night announced that Tim Bresnan was unavailable to play for Yorkshire for the remainder of the season including the Friends Life t20 Finals Day in Cardiff this weekend.

The Club however understands that Tim’s involvement in Finals Day depends on decisions to be made by the England management following the NatWest ODI on Friday.

The Club remains hopeful that Tim will be able to represent Yorkshire Carnegie on Finals Day but will also respect any decision made that furthers the chances of the England national side.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow has been released by England to play at the weekend.
