Lewis Stabler routed Castleford with 6-10 before opener Jonathan Tattersall, above, compiled a sound 35 to ensure an eight-point victory for Yorkshire Academy in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League at Weetwood.
A warm, sunny day at last. The Academy lost the toss…but was it a wise move by Castleford to bat first? Josh Shaw removed opener Brayden Clark’s off stump after 10 balls. 1-1. Then the experienced Andrew Bourke and wicket-keeper Pickering scored at over four an over to take the score to 45.
The ever economical Ben Coad had Pickering caught at mid-off by WillRhodes, and it was downhill all the way. Stabler replaced Shaw at the City end with immediate success: three middle-order men all failed to trouble the scorers – lbw victims to Stabler. Skipper Dominic Sharp was one of Stabler’s scalps, while Liam Hyde fell to left-arm spinner Carver.
Only two batsmen, Bourke (30) and Pickering (27) reached double figures, and seven failed to score. It was Stabler’s best performance in the League this year, and had two catches not been dropped it would have been even worse for Castleford. The speed of the collapse meant that tea was not taken between the innings, and after ony 10 minutes the Academy openers walked out.
Eliot Callis and Tattersall enjoyed an opening partnership of 28 before Freddie Collins trapped Callis in front. Skipper Jack Leaning and Tattersall were relatively untroubled, and took the total to within two runs of victory.
Tattersall’s excellent knock ended when he flashed at one from 14-year-old leg-spinner Liam Hyde and Pickering snapped up the edge. Leaning hit the winner with a fine drive through mid-wicket to see his side to an eight-wicket victory and the full eight points.
It was an excellent performance by Stabler, who ripped Castleford apart with an analysis of 6-1-10-6. No doubt he will be hoping for further success today when Driffield are the visitors to Weetwood.
