A sparkling 36 from opener Jonathan Tattersall, above, showed the way for Yorkshire Academy – but they subsided to 179-9 in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League clash with York at Clifton Park, and then were overwhelmed by what could have been the hardest hitting of the League year.
Oliver Hairs smashed his way to what could the League’s fastest 50 of the year in 30 balls and 39 minutes as York knocked off the runs for the loss of only one wicket, and so recorded an incomplete win with six points to nil.
Academy skipper Jack Leaning won the toss and elected to bat, but York had an early success when Ryan Gibson was caught by Collins at short-extra-cover. Tattersall and Leaning added 44, but Leaning was on 17 when he advanced to be stumped by Crossley.
Tattersall played some excellent shots square of the wicket, and as usual he ran well. He was looking good on 36 when a diving caught-and-bowled by Tom Pringle at 65 saw him return to the pavilion. One run later he was followed by George Ross, another Pringle victim. Mosun Hussain fell to Murphy’s diving catch off Ryan McKendry, whose economy rate of 2.14 slowed the Academy down.
A fine stand of 40 between wicket-keeper Eddie Wilson and Will Rhodes followed. Wilson was bowled by Pringle for a stout 29, but Rhodes again showed promise, occupying the crease for 83 minutes for the top score of 45. Rhodes was another stumping victim off Pringle, but at the 55-over closure the Academy had recovered respectably from 71-5 .
They were not all out, so York would be limited to six points if they should overtake this total.
Openers Duncan Snell, 25, and Liam McKendry enjoyed a fine, untroubled opening stand of 61, broken only by a direct hit from cover-point Gibson. Hard-hitting Hairs, who joined McKendry, was severe on anything loose: he completed what could be the fastest 50 in the League this year with a huge six off Ross over long-on, with eight fours and three sixes.
The hundred partnership came in 78, balls and only Ben Coad and LouisStabler contained the hosts, who ran out victors by nine wickets.
