ACAD: Holiday sees Yorkshire Colts bank six points
— 8 May 2012
George Ross, above, backed skipper Jack Leaning in a third-wicket stand of 115 as Yorkshire Academy returned from their Bank Holiday trip to Driffield with six more points in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.
A lost toss and the threat of rain did not augur well as Jack led out the Colts in the absence of Azeem Rafiq. Left-arm spinner Carl Karver made his League debut – and one to remember with both bat and ball.
Josh Shaw bowled Sam Drury for a duck in the third over to bring in Pakistan ‘A’ batsman Aamer Sajjid, who had chalked up two centuries in his last two League innings. Dropped at slip before he had reached double figures, he fell to Ashley Robinson for 29 in the 21st over. He looked a class player, timing the ball well. The scoring rate was then 3.2 per over.
Left-hander Cadmore, 83, enjoyed a fine partnership of 129 with opener Mark Clarkson, who was to reach 64. Twenty overs on, Cadman fell to a diving caught-and-bowled by Karver, who then bowled Danny Broumpton for a duck and Nick Hardgrave for 11 . George Drury and John Major pushed Driffield to a challenging 248-8 in the allotted 55 overs.
Jonathan Tattersall, 38,and Eddie Wilson, 18, laid the Academy’s foundation with an opening stand of 55, averaging 3.9 per over. Tattersall was caught off opening bowling Ollie Ezard, and three runs later Wilson was bowled by the medium pace of skipper Dave Brent.
This set the scene for Leaning, 75, and Ross, 53, to take centre-stage with 115 in 25 overs. Spinner Nick Hardgrave and Dave Brent combined well until the 51st over, Hardgrave picking up three wickets. At 209 with four overs remaining Ezard returned – with 40 still required for victory. With the final ball crashed for four by debutant Karverthe visitors had a victory which at one stage seemed impossible.
A fine but incomplete victory which gave the Academy six points.
